Choose a source with horizontal space
Portrait-oriented photos often lose too much when forced into a wide banner. Look for a landscape source with room beside the subject, especially if a headline or button will occupy one side.
Plan around overlay content
Place the subject away from text zones and keep faces clear of likely navigation or controls. Remember that responsive banners can crop further on narrow screens, so protect the center and test common viewport shapes.
Crop first, then resize
Lock the crop to 16:9, refine the composition, and export at the dimensions the website needs. Cropping and resizing are related but separate decisions: one sets the frame, the other sets its pixel count.
